The Shubenacadie River in Nova Scotia stretches over 72 kilometres and is home to one of the most thrilling and unique rafting adventures in the world. Powered by the Bay of Fundy tides—the highest tides on Earth—this river is famous for the tidal bore, a natural phenomenon that reverses the river’s flow and creates rollercoaster-like rapids.

🧐 How the Tidal Bore Works

Twice a day, the incoming tide from the Bay of Fundy pushes into the Minas Basin, forcing seawater up the Shubenacadie River. As the river narrows and shallows, the tide creates a visible wave—known as the tidal bore—that travels upriver and generates whitewater rapids, reaching heights of up to 3 meters.

This powerful natural event makes the Shubenacadie one of the only places in the world where tidal bores create raftable rapids. It’s also the only location in North America where commercial rafting on a tidal bore is possible.

🚤 Where It All Began

Tidal bore rafting as a sport started in the early 1980s, when local adventurers realized the bore wasn’t just a fascinating natural event—it could also be ridden. One of the earliest pioneers was H. Knoll, who began taking guests out on the river using Zodiac boats. His family would go on to establish what is now known as the Tidal Bore Rafting Resort, the first commercial operator of its kind in the world.

Since then, several other companies have joined the scene, including Shubie River Wranglers!

🛶 Why the Shubenacadie River?

There are tidal bores in a handful of places globally—China, the UK, and a few rivers in South America—but none offer an experience like the Shubenacadie. Here’s why:

  • World’s highest tides create powerful bores
  • Riverbanks made of soft red clay create thrilling mud-sliding conditions
  • River meanders and narrows, producing standing waves and rapids
  • Scenic views, wildlife (including bald eagles), and cultural history

🌟 A Legacy of Adventure

Over the past 40+ years, tidal bore rafting on the Shubenacadie River has grown into a major tourism draw in Nova Scotia. Today’s tours are safer, more accessible, and cater to all adventure levels—from family-friendly to extreme high-tide trips.

In addition to rafting, many tours now include:

  • Rain gear and life jackets
  • Old shoes to borrow
  • Hot showers post-ride
  • Even stories of eagle rescues and other unique wildlife encounters
